Label Unwinders

Label unwinders feed large-diameter label rolls into your printer from an external spool, bypassing the internal roll compartment size limit. Most desktop label printers accept rolls up to 5″ or 8″ in outer diameter. An unwinder lets you run rolls up to 12″ OD or larger, reducing reload frequency and allowing you to buy larger, more economical roll quantities.

Powered vs unpowered unwinders

Unpowered (free-spinning) unwinders rely on the printer’s own motor to pull the label web. They work with most thermal transfer and direct thermal printers and are the lower-cost option for moderate print speeds. Powered unwinders add a motor that actively drives the supply roll, maintaining consistent tension even at high print speeds or when the roll is nearly full and drag increases. If your printer runs above 6 inches per second or you use wide label stock, a powered unwinder reduces the risk of skipping or label stretch at the feed point.
